Approaching bus stops to be announced - Whats latest about the MTC buses in Chennai now?

Huge relief and no more issues for the MTC bus passengers regarding the approaching bus stops in Chennai!!
Many people who use MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses in Chennai are not aware of the approaching bus stops and this has been creating many issues for these passengers. To announce the approaching bus stops for the sake of the passengers, MTC has started the installation of GPS based systems in the buses just recently.
Point is that geo-coding of 6000 bus stops in Chennai plus parts of neighbouring districts was completed 2 years back itself. Only a few days back, the installation of GPS based systems in the MTC buses started. This was mentioned by an official belonging to MTC. The officer explained that 6 speakers are being fitted in every MTC bus and wiring work has been going on. He concluded that for installation of a GPS system in 1000 more MTC buses tenders have been floated. In a phased manner, the rest of the buses would be covered also.
In the beginning, the announcement regarding approaching bus stops would be done in Tamil language only and later on English would also be used. It is worthy to note that the announcement about the approaching bus stop would be made 200m to 250m before the next stoppage.
The location tracking devices have been fitted in all the MTC buses in Chennai and it is now mentioned that the GPS announcement system would be introduced in all ordinary, express and deluxe buses.
Poorly maintained display boards have been an issue for many passengers on the 37G route MTC buses. This was according to a bus enthusiast from Iyyappanthangal in Chennai. Truth is that on a trial basis, the bus announcement was introduced on the 37 G route plus in a few other route buses a few months back itself.
