The power managers are very busy now in Chennai and they are speeding up the work on 3 substations belonging to south Chennai. The main aim behind this would be to strengthen the distribution network.

In 2022, the electricity demand has touched an all time high of 3750 MW and it is expected to go more than 4000 MW in the future.

The conventional substations or old substations are being upgraded to gas insulated substations and this would improve the power distribution in several localities in south Chennai such as Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Velachery, Pallikaranai, Madipakkam and Rajiv Gandhi Salai of Information Technology etc.

On 14th of June 2022, the power demand touched a maximum of 3763 MW and all time consumption of 82.96 million units. This has been taken into account by the agency while planning for the future. This was as per a senior officer belonging to Tangedco.

He threw light on the up-gradation of 2 important substations and setting up a new substation. These 2 substations have reached their maximum capacity is known.

The Taramani substation is being converted from 230kV into 400 kV and the substation at Thiruvanmiyur is being converted from the present 11/33kV into 230kV substation.

In addition to the existing substation, the Velachery section would be getting a new 110kV substation near the private mall on the Velachery Main Road.

It is now said that the work on the 3 substations like Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery are at different stages of completion. The facilities at Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur would be commissioned by the end of 2022. Before March 2023, the substation at Velachery would get completed.

An amount of Rs 530 crores is being used to construct the 3 substations. Various benefits of these substations are prevention of transmission loss, presence of alternative power sources during a major failure, being the GIS substations the problem of flooding would not be there.

Power supply would be directly available from the grid at the 400 kV Taramani substation and by this severe voltage problems would be solved in the entire south Chennai. There are also possibilities of adding more substations to the network by this substation at Taramani

The line loss would be brought down drastically because of the up-gradation of Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur substations present at a distance of 5km from each other. This was pointed out by a senior official from Tangedco. There would be the possibility of providing alternative supply to 110kV substations during any major power failures etc.

Information is that KEI International has been responsible for execution of the Taramani substation project at more than Rs 400 crores. The substation is almost complete with the completion of the civil construction works.

It must be noted that all the equipment has been received to install 2 numbers of 500 MVA transformers, 2 numbers of 200 MVA transformers and 2 numbers of 50 MVA transformers. The construction works have been going on at the Velachery substation and BGR Energy has been responsible for the execution.
