For the integrated storm water drain of SWD project at Kovalam Basin in Chennai, GCC has got the approval from TN Coastal Zone Management. This SWD project would be covering places like Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai , Injambakkam and Utandi etc. The cost of the total project for a distance of 360 km would be Rs 1243 crores and this part of the Germany based KfW Bank funded project would cost Rs 309 crores.

Many residents in these places have been objecting to the project saying natural infrastructure interventions must be preferred over concrete blocks. Soon, GCC will be holding a public meeting to take the views of the residents. The proposal has been sent to the state government and it would be sent to the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change. The GCC must make sure that the design is as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (Southern zone). This was brought out by TNCZMA.
