NO MORE mixing of sewage with Adyar River, Cooum River and Buckingham River in Chennai!!

To prevent the mixing of sewage water with main waterways such as Adyar River, Cooum River and Buckingham Canal etc, an amount of Rs 402 crores has been allotted.

It is worthy to note that work is being carried out by diverting the sewage water to the sewage water pumping stations, setting up of sewage treatment plants, laying large scale pipelines and providing sewage water connections etc. It is now revealed by the officials of the water board that the above said waterways would become a clear stream.

Until 2011, the Chennai Corporation had 10 zones, 155 wards in an area of 174 sq km. The urbanisation and excess population has forced the Chennai Corporation to expand up to 15 zones now with an area of 426 sq km. There are as many as 200 wards in Chennai now.

Chennai Corporation has 22 Assembly constituencies and 3 main waterways like Adyar River, Cooum River and Buckingham Canal etc. Adyar River travels for a distance of 20km, Cooum River for 32km and Buckingham Canal for 30km in the expanded Chennai municipal corporation. Truth is that it would drain flood water in the rainy season plus at other times it is a channel to add sewage water into the sea. This has been responsible for all the 3 waterways getting contaminated with sewage.

It is known that the TN government at various times have been spending lots of money to prevent mixing of sewage water in waterways and despite this sewage water has been overflowing in these major waterways in Chennai. In 2004 when the Tsunami occurred and during the heavy floods in 2015, these waterways had a clear appearance.

As per some social activists, nature has itself helped in cleaning all the 3 waterways and it is important not to allow sewage to mix with the waterways. By this, the environment would be safe.

A survey regarding sewage contamination with water was conducted and it was found out from the survey that sewage water contaminations were seen at 39 places along the Adyar River, 33 places along Cooum River and 22 places along the Buckingham Canal.  Information gathered is that CRRT and Drinking Water Board jointly took steps to prevent contamination of sewage with the 3 waterways in Chennai at a cost of Rs 402 crores.

It must be taken into note that Rs 125 crores is being spent for the works to prevent sewage contamination along the Adyar River, Rs 193 crores spent for Cooum River for Rs 84 crores spent for Buckingham Canal. Here, the sewage water is being diverted in another pipe line to the sewage treatment plant. In those places where sewage water cannot be diverted, purification plants have been set up.
