Chennai road repairing work - Whats happening now?

The heavy rains that lashed Chennai in November and December have damaged many roads. Now, the Chennai Corporation has formed teams to monitor the road repair works. The teams include deputy commissioners too.

It is learnt that an additional amount Rs 213 crores has been sanctioned for the repair of 1656 internal roads and bus route roads in Chennai. This was according to the GCC commissioner MR. Gagandeep Singh Bedi on Friday. Point to be noted is that GCC maintains as many as471 bus roads for a length of 387kms and 34640 interior roads to a length of 5270 kms.  In the year 2021, funds were allotted to repair as many as 7132 roads extending to1066 kms.

Many roads in Chennai were damaged when metro water pipelines, underground power cables etc were laid. Optical fiber cables that were laid too damaged many roads in Chennai.

The rains have stopped now in Chennai and the municipal administration and water supply minister Mr. K.N Nehru has asked GCC to repair the damaged roads.

It was pointed out in a press release that the funds needed to relay the damaged roads in Chennai due to heavy rains would be provided by TURIP or Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project, Singara Chennai 2.0and SDRF. An amount of Rs 32.58 crores has already been sanctioned under Singara Chennai 2.0 project and works have been going on in 59 bus route roads of 40km.

It must be noted that TURIP has sanctioned funds of Rs 17.37 crores and this is being utilized for repairing 22 bus route roads for 13.58km. For repairing 1575 internal concrete roads, Rs 158 crores has been sanctioned. Chennai corporation commissioner shed light regarding the strict orders that have been given to mill old roads and to mix tar in the right proportion etc.
