The monsoon preparedness works are now going at full speed in Chennai!!

The north Chennai residents are now having fears regarding floods due to multiple roads crisscrossing the Kosasthalaiyar river backwaters in the Ennore Creek.

It is worthy to mention that these roads were laid by TANTRANSCO or Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd for erecting transmission towers for 400KV and 765 KV power evacuation lines

It was clear from the official documents that TANTRANSCO has been constructing 124 transmission towers and 71 of them fall in the CRZ or coastal regulation zone. On 1st November 2019, CRZ clearance was obtained from the Union Environment Ministry. Point is that while issuing the clearance the Union ministry had laid certain conditions.

As per one condition, it was clear that any physical infrastructure set up during the construction period shall be removed simultaneously with the completion of laying of each segment of the erection project. Work on around 30 transmission towers has been completed and temporary roads were laid. In addition, construction debris was dumped inside the water body. Even after the completion of tower works, the place was not restored back to normal. The concrete debris roads were not removed by TANTRANSCO till now. It is known that concrete debris roads were laid blocking water flow in several parts of backwaters.

A voluntary group working for the protection of Ennore wetlands, Save Ennore Campaign has made an independent assessment regarding the extent of area lost due to the roads. It was brought to light by the campaign that more than 39acres of wetlands have been encroached upon.
