The number of cases reported at the trauma wards in the government hospitals in Chennai has gone up to a huge extent now. It is now said that the reopening of Tasmac liquor outlets has been cited as the reason behind the rise in trauma cases. It is true that the majority of those who were admitted were in inebriated condition.

In the north Chennai based Stanley Medical College and Hospital, in normal circumstances around 30 surgery cases were reported everyday at the TN Accident and Emergency Care ward or TAEI ward. The shocking piece of information is that on Tuesday more than 200 surgery cases were reported and almost 70% were intoxicated.

Road accidents, head injuries due to fall, stab wounds were responsible for the more number of cases at the trauma wards. Point is that there were also few cases of poisoning where people have drunk phenyl floor cleaners thinking it as water. The aggressive and violent behaviour shown by many husbands (after drinking liquor) has caused serious injuries to their wives and these women were admitted. In Chennai, a man fell down from the stairs as he was drunk and suffered brain haemorrhage. This was mentioned by a doctor yesterday in her tweet. Various major Chennai based hospitals also saw similar cases and this has made many to worry now.

Number of deaths due to drunken driving has increased in Chennai and this was confirmed by the data from the Greater Chennai Traffic Police or GCTP. Until last week, when Tasmac shops were closed the number of motorists who died in road accidents were less than 5 or 6 per day but now it has doubled. Vehicle checks have been intensified in Chennai by GCTP.

On Monday, a total of 30 motorists were booked for drunken driving at many usual checkpoints in Chennai. Now, the police department is thinking about setting up checkpoints to avoid gathering of the motorists, procedure on confiscation and detaining of vehicles etc. According to a senior official belonging to GCTP, the cops have been advised not to get too close to the motorists while using breathalysers to check the blood alcohol content.

It is now revealed that the police are drafting a standard operating procedure or SOP for the purpose of ensuring physical distancing and other safety Covid-19 guidelines to be followed during such checks. Point is that the models that were adopted in the neighbouring states have been studied now.
