The long wait is now over and the Chennaites could feel happy now!!

In the next week, Chennai metro phase-2 project might start finally between Poonamallee and Porur and this stretch would be the first to be opened after 4 long years.

To construct this stretch of a distance of 7.9km, CMRL has awarded the Rs 1147 crores contract to Hindustan Construction Company HCC and KEC International limited KEC joint venture last month. This was according to some officers belonging to CMRL. The officials later mentioned that barricading of some stretches of the road was done to begin the work.

It is now brought out that this 7.9km stretch between Poonamallee and Porur would be built totally as an elevated stretch. Various stations that would be present between these 2 places are Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyappanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee bus terminus and Poonamallee Bypass.

An official from CMRL hinted that a small pooja would be conducted in the next week and then test piling work etc would be started. After the piling work gets completed, then the pier work would begin in the elevated stretch. It is learnt that the piling work might take up a year or more.

Before beginning full- fledged construction work, issues such as traffic regulations, utility cables etc must be resolved. This was also mentioned by the official. Truth is that the construction of the stretch might take up to 3 years, integration of signalling and telecommunications systems would take a few more months of time.
