Posted on: 30/Apr/2021 9:22:28 AM
Recently, the TN state government had issued orders to ban the standing passengers inside the buses for the sake of social distancing. Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has been finding it tough to implement this.

The news now is that GCC has requested MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation to operate additional buses in Chennai. From a survey, it was clear that 45% of Chennai`s population depends on the MTC bus services. Factors like timings etc has made many not able to switch to other modes of transport to reach their destinations. Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai corporation commissioner was of the view that the present fleet of MTC buses were not enough for the population.

It must be taken into account that the MTC fleet has around 3700 buses and MTC is operating 400 additional buses after the TN government banned standing passengers inside the buses. Only seated passengers inside the buses are allowed now with the spike in the number of covid-19 cases in TN. This was according to the Covid-19 restrictions issued recently.

The Chennai corporation commissioner later spoke about how in addition to the current number of buses operated now the transport department has been asked to deploy more buses or rent private buses on contract basis. He wanted the public to avoid the buses and advised them to use their own vehicles to reach their destinations. He later spoke about how there are as many as240 crematoriums and how all have been functioning presently. From 3%, the death rate in Chennai has been brought down to 1.47% now.
