Echo resurgent corona: will the vote-counting start as scheduled? Postponed? What EC is observing?

Posted on: 19/Apr/2021 1:27:54 PM
As a preventive measure against the resurgent coronavirus pandemic, the State Government of Tamil Nadu has announced the nighttime 100% lockdown imposition from tomorrow (Tuesday, 20th April). 100% lockdown is imposed on Sundays as well!

It has been announced that the above lockdowns will prevail until further orders from the State Government!

Given the above situation and the resurgent corona virus prevailing, the counting of votes for the recently conducted Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly Elections is scheduled to commence on 2nd May! As 2nd May falls on a Sunday when the 100% lockdown is imposed!

So, the question has arisen in the political circles whether the counting of votes will commence as scheduled or whether it will be postponed!

When enquiring about this in the Election Commission Circles, it was gathered:

“Identity Cards have been issued to the Election Officers who will be engaged in the counting of votes. Similarly, Identity Cards have been issued to the contestants and the agents. These Identity Cards have been issued to the newspaper reported who gather related news. So, there may not be any disturbance in the vote-counting task under the Essential Services for them to function.

As such, the vote counting will be done as scheduled and the results to be announced as scheduled!”

It is a normally observed thing for the political party members and aficionados to gather at the party headquarters/offices to know the trend of the counting. Members of the winning party will celebrate bursting crackers and distributing sweets.  However, the lockdown conditions imposed may hamper such usual celebrations at such times!
