The city of Chennai has plenty of water now!!

After the heavy rains in the last week in Chennai, atleast 80 percent of its 5reservoirs have become full now. Chennai also received rains immediately preceding cyclone Nivar is known to us. At present, Chennai has got plenty of drinking water. It is important to mention here that the 5 reservoirs and Veeranam in Cuddalore district together holds 8.5tmc water. This would be sufficient for the 9 month requirement of Chennai city.

The news now is MWD or Metro Water Department has decided to increase the drinking water release to Chennai from the current 750MLD to 830 MLD. On alternate days only, the core places in Chennai gets water supply till now. In the future, the Chennai residents would be able to get daily supply of drinking water as the storage levels get increased.  An announcement about this would be made soon and this was according to an official belonging to the MWD.

The official spoke about how with the comfortable storage position MWD has decided to increase the piped water supply to the residents belonging to the core areas in Chennai.  Since the year 2015, it was the first time the PWD released water from the Chembarambakkam Lake and the water release was scaled down to 1000 cusecs yesterday from 9000 cusecs on Wednesday. It must be taken into account that the metro water increased withdrawal from Chembarambakkam from the earlier 75 MLD to 100 MLD is now drawing 220 MLD for drinking water supply.

He then threw light about how another low pressure area would be forming in the Bay of Bengal in another few days of time and how that would bring more rains. Truth is that in such a situation storing water would become an issue and it would have to be released into the sea. The MWD wanted to avoid such a situation and therefore decided to increase piped supply to the people belonging to Chennai.

Information collected is the Srisailam and Somasila reservoirs in the neighbouring AP are nearing full capacity. The third reservoir Kandaleru is also in the process of getting filled up. Point is Kandaleru River is present in the Rapur Mandal belonging to Nellore district is well known to us.  It is now said that once full the TN officials belonging to PWD could request their counterparts in AP to release water from there through Krishna canal.
