Chennai southern suburbs get heavy rains - People not willing to go to safe places

Posted on: 26/Nov/2020 9:04:49 AM
Heavy rains lashed Chennai yesterday and mostly the southern suburbs were badly affected with rain water entering into many houses.  The residents belonging to these places do not want to go to other places like camps that have been arranged by the district administration. The residents were of the view that their houses might be looted like what happened in the year 2015.

Places like Tambaram, Varadharajapuram, Lakshmi Nagar, PTC Quarters, TTK Nagar have been flooded by the heavy rains. It must be noted that the district administration had moved the people to the camps arranged in the churches, schools etc. this was because of an increase in the water levels.

Truth is most residents do not show any interest in vacating their houses. Some residents explained that during the 2015 floods they had vacated their houses and went to the relief camps. After returning back, they had found their houses looted and many things stolen.

As per a resident belonging to Varadharajapuram, it was not possible to stay in the camps in peace. He added that instead of shifting the residents every year during the rains the TN government must build storm water drains to prevent flooding. Another southern suburban place is Chitlapakkam and a resident of this place pointed out that in 2018 the collector directed the officials to build drainage. The point is that the works have started but not yet completed.

Information gathered is the drainage construction work here has been irregular since it began and it came to a halt in March 2020 due to the lockdown to contain the spread of Coronavirus infection. The situation in places like Mudichur etc was very bad in 2015but now it is not that bad. There is constant fear among the residents in Mudichur that the situation could get worse if the discharge from Chembarambakkam becomes more.
