Effects of Cyclone Nivar in Chennai, residents unhappy

Posted on: 26/Nov/2020 9:00:50 AM
From Tuesday night itself, many low lying localities in Chennai faced power cuts. This was even before Cyclone Nivar had made landfall. The main reason why power supply was cut was to avoid electrocutions. This was mentioned by some officials belonging to Tangedco.  There were power disruptions for one to 3/4 hours in many places.

In many low lying localities like Velachery, Madipakkam, Tambaram, Kolathur, Perambur and T. Nagar, power supply was cut for more than 5 hours also.  It was brought out by a resident belonging to Gopalapuram that the power supply was cut at 10am and was not restored inspite of many complaints. He then threw light on how the power supply was cut even before the cyclone crossed the coast and not when the cyclone crossed the coast.

From the early morning on Wednesday itself, there was no power supply in many parts belonging to Pozhichalur. This was pointed out by a resident. The resident then spoke about how without the power supply water could be stored in the tanks.

Only in the water logged areas the power supply was cut and this was explained by a senior officer belonging to Tangedco. He added that the power supply was stopped in those areas where inundation was reported. Truth is that in case of overhead cables the power supply would be disconnected during heavy rains and strong winds as a precautionary step.

From 4pm in the evening on Wednesday, power supply has been disconnected in ECR in Chennai. There are few places where the cables were snapped due to uprooting of the trees and the staff have been working to restore power supply. An official explained that when a cyclone makes landfall the power supply would be disconnected as per the local weather conditions. Point is after the cyclone crossed the coast measures would be taken to restore power supply.
