On Sunday, 26th April 2020, the Aavin milk packets were sold at higher prices in black than the maximum retail price or MRP in Chennai. Many residents have complained about this. The reason for this was due to shortage.

The half litre milk packets priced at Rs 23 were sold at Rs 35 to Rs 40 on platforms in Purasawalkam in Chennai. This was as per Mr. T. Sadagopan, president of TN progressive Consumer Care.

It is now said that the vendors had purchased the milk packets in bulk from Aavin outlets and have sold them at high cost to get profit.

Information is many consumers belonging to places like Nanganallur, Kodambakkam and Royapettah etc posted on social media about this overpricing. Sales at the authorized depots at and sales units have been dealt by Aavin official helpline. It is known that in the Chennai city, there are as many as 1654 depots, delivery points, parlours and franchise retail outlets belonging to Aavin.

It was later mentioned by a senior official belonging to Aavin that there were teams that were involved in keeping check on the prices of milk packets sold. On a daily basis, 12 lakh litres of milk gets sold at these points. It must be taken into account that since the first week of April the sale has increased to 13.8 lakh litres. The 4 day total lock down was given as a reason for the people stocking up milk packets.

Many people waited at the Aavin sales units from 4 am in the morning itself but most shops opened at 5:30 am only. Point is by 6 am all the shops ran out of stocks and the people were asked to come after 12 noon. By noon, Aavin increased the production and made sure that the milk was available at all its stores.
