A trader had tested positive for Corona virus at the Koyambedu wholesale market and this had sent shock waves.

As a result, now CMDA and Chennai Corporation have been involved in the disinfection of this market. It was brought out by some wholesale merchants that the person who had tested positive for Corona virus was from Kundrathur and he purchased lemons and onions from the Koyambedu market.

It was revealed by a wholesale merchant that the Corporation officials have enquired about the shops from where he made purchases. It is now said that the disinfection of all shops would be carried out by the corporation in this week. There would also be collection of samples from other traders soon. There were nearly 15000 people who visited Koyambedu market on Sunday and about 1000 shops were opened.

To assess the preparedness of supply of essential commodities to residents associations in the gated communities in Chennai, the officials belonging to the central team visited the market.

It must be noted that arrangements were made by the housing secretary Mr. Rajesh Lakhoni and CMDA member secretary, Mr. D. Karthikeyan to send essential commodities for the Resident’s associations that made bulk orders for veggies and fruits. On Sunday, the gated communities of all the 15 zones received essential commodities.

Screening was done for Covid-19 on the workers who delivered the essential commodities. It is important to note that the vehicles were also disinfected before despatching was carried out. It is well known that Koyambedu wholesale market was inaugurated in 1996 and is Asia’s one of the largest perishable goods market complex.
