North Chennai is grabbing the attention for wrong reasons now.

It must be taken into account that during the last year monsoon season many dengue cases were reported in north Chennai. At present, a number of acute diarrhoeal disease or ADD cases have been on the rise in north Chennai and it is said that north Chennai is again in the scanner of GCC.

To make sure that the citizens are given clean water, the civic body and CMWSSB would be starting a drive. It is known that in a few days school examinations would start in Chennai and the drive has been planned now. It was brought out by the corporation sources that in 2019 around 1500 cases of ADD were recorded in Tondiarpet and Royapuram zones and in the month of January 100 to 130 ADD cases were reported from these zones.

One-third of the unsatisfactory of water samples collected at source in Chennai city were from Tondiarpet zone alone. This was as per an official data. Around 70 water samples collected from this zone were found unsatisfactory and 35 had E. coli bacteria that is responsible for diarrhoea in humans.

There are many roadside stalls plus slum clearance board quarters in north Chennai and it was pointed out by the civic body officials that the diarrhoea was due to these 2 factors. To pinpoint only particular locality is contributing towards a higher number of ADD cases, the health department officials are mulling about collecting ward specific data on ADD.
