For piped gas distribution in Chennai, Gujarat firm Torrent gas gets approval

Posted on: 19/Feb/2020 11:30:29 AM
The latest news is Gujarat based firm Torrent Gas has been given approval by the Supreme Court for piped gas distribution network in Chennai and Tiruvallur in TN. It must be noted that this Torrent Gas has been involved in the supply and distribution of CNG or compressed natural gas and PNG or piped natural gas.

The bid was floated by PNGRB or Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and in the month of September in 2018 Torrent Gas won that bid. The main objective was to lay the City Gas Distribution of CGD infrastructure to provide CNG and PNG in the Chennai city and in Tiruvallur district.

Another Gujarat based company Adani Gas Limited challenged the authorization of PNGRB as the bid of the Torrent Gas was unreasonably high and PNGRB ought to have rejected the bid. Adani Group’s petition was rejected by the court on 17th February and the court stated that the power to determine the reasonability f bids resided solely with PNGRB (by virtue of clause14.2 of bid document). The SC also revealed that PNGRB’s determination on reasonability was neither arbitrary nor in violation of the principles of natural justice.

It was later pointed out by the executive director of Torrent Group Mr Jayesh Desai that the decks to lay CGD infrastructure in Chennai and Tiruvallur have been cleared by SC judgement. It is important to mention that Chennai is the only metro city in India where CGD infrastructure doesn’t exist as on date.
