Swap shop by GCC in Adyar zone is sensational, many people benefited

Swap Shop in the Adyar zone ahead of Bhogi Pongal is grabbing the attention now. This swap shop on 12th and 13th January was announced by the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is known. This swap shop yesterday had an amazing response from the people and this surprised GCC.

The swap shop took place at TNHB community hall in Besant Nagar and many people came to this place. There were many items ranging from apparels to home appliances like furniture sets, refrigerators, microwave oven etc and these caught the attention of many people.

The number of people who came to swap shop was so high that the staffs belonging to GCC opened the community hall an hour before the scheduled time and had to shut the shop early because all theorems were sold out. 

About 1800 items were sold at a nominal price of Rs 23,000 and each item on an average price at Rs 12.75. According to Alby John, regional deputy commissioner south, Chennai, the corporation was not particular about the prices. Volunteers from the resident’s welfare associations were given the right to fix the prices. These volunteers played a huge role in collecting old unused items are known. He added that the main aim of this swap shop was to promote the idea of reuse.

For the last 2 days, the GCC has been appealing the residents of Adyar to take part in the swap shop are known. It is now said that this appeal by GCC has resonated well. The important point to be noted here is what people might not need could be of real use to someone else.

It was later brought out by an assistant engineer who co-ordinated this collection drive that member’s of residents associations were roped and door-to-door campaigns were conducted. 

A civic body contract worker purchased a refrigerator in working condition by paying just Rs 200. In the same manner, by paying just Rs 100 a sanitary worker got a microwave oven. At this swap shop, bicycles, music systems, walkers etc were donated by the residents and sold for nominal rates.
