Land acquisition for last 500 m stretch for Velachery- St Thomas Mount MRTS delayed

Posted on: 13/Jan/2020 10:07:58 AM
It is now said that the land acquisition process of the last 500 m stretch for Velachery to St Thomas Mount MRTS project is having issues.

A contempt notice has been issued by the four litigants (whose lands in Thillai Ganga Nagar are proposed to be acquired by the state government) to the government officials.

As per the contempt notice, the orders of the Madras HC in its judgement on 12th June 2019 were not followed and there was deliberate disobedience while calculating compensation for their lands.

On 6th January 2020, the contempt notice was issued and it was received by all offices including special tahsildar for land acquisition Chennai district collector, housing secretary and deputy chief engineer of southern railways. Receipt of notice has been confirmed by a senior official.

It has been brought out by the litigants that the state government has planned to acquire only 1851 sq ft of 2460 sq ft land parcel. There would not be any use regarding the rest 789 sq ft because there would not be any access. The litigants want the compensation to be fixed for the entire extent.

It is important to note that the government officials have agreed to acquire it after the judgement from the Madras High Court.  Recently, the notice was served and the notice did not mention how the compensation for the land parcel would be calculated. Point is tahsildar did not issue orders under the relevant sections of the land acquisition act plus did not conduct a personal enquiry as mandated by the HC.

There are differences in the rates that the government said it would pay the residents as compensation amount and the legal issue has been raised. Important information is residents of Thillai Ganga Nagar would be paid Rs 3743 per square feet and litigants across the road would be paid Rs 4500 per square feet.
