In Chennai hospitals more kids get admitted due to many fever cases now

The shocking piece of news is most of the Chennai city based hospitals are having many patients now in the paediatric wards. It must be noted that recently the temperatures have dipped in Chennai and there were rains. Information is due to the rains many kids were affected.

Egmore based ICH or Institute of Child Health is one of the highly famous hospitals in Chennai and the outpatient or OP units here had 25% increase in the fever cases. This hospital director, Dr. Jayachandran spoke about how many kids came with the complaints of fever along with symptoms like cold, cough, vomiting and diarrhoea etc. He added that air borne viral infections were the cause for admission for most kids and number of dengue cases are also going up.

As per the hospital medical director of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital, Dr. S. Balasubramanian it is clear that since 1st of July as many as 37 dengue cases were admitted. He pointed out that till July the beds were empty and now beds have got have filled up. He added that many kids with flu, hand foot and mouth diseases and respiratory infections were admitted. It is important to note that more than 20 kids with dengue were admitted in this hospital in August.

Information is in cities like Bengaluru there were many dengue cases but the climb in dengue cases in Chennai has just started for this year. This was confirmed by Dr. Balasubramanian. It must be noted that inside 2 days most patients affected with dengue recover with medications and IV fluids.

According to Dr. Suchitra Ranjith, intensivist belonging to the Apollo Children’s Hospital, one third of ICU admissions is tropical fevers with multiple organ dysfunctions. She explained about how the kids get admitted with just fever but later develop lung and kidney complications etc. Finally she explained about how these kids need quick resuscitation and life support like ventilation or dialysis etc.

It was pointed out by Dr. Bala Ramachandran, head of ICUs at Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital that kids who do not have other issues like heart failure etc recover fast. He revealed that there are multiple strains of the virus and how they don’t try to find the virus because it doesn’t change the course of the treatment. Information to be noted is kids come with low grade fever, body pain, fatigue etc at the out-patient units.
