Posted on: 20/Aug/2019 10:10:16 AM
In the last 3 months, private water tankers have called for strike for two times is known. In Chennai, private water tankers face many issues like license to operate etc and these tankers seek the government’s intervention so that they could function without any hassle. It is now brought out that for the above said reason the private tankers would go on a strike from 21st of August 2019. This was announced by the Tamil Nadu Private Water Lorry Owners Association. By this, it would become the third time in the last 3 months these tankers have called for the strike.

According to Mr. Nijalingam, association’s president, police have been filing cases of theft under the Section 379 of Indian Penal Code plus have arrested drivers and owners in TN. For this reason, the strike would take place. He pointed out that there is now shortage of water tanker drivers as many people are not willing to drive the tankers due to registration of cases.

It must not be forgotten that recently in Red Hills in Chennai cases were filed against the water tanker operators and drivers and in Pallikaranai 2 lorrys were seized. The lorry drivers were given assurance by the officials of the district administration that action would be taken to issue licences to draw groundwater and to operate water tankers.

Mr. Nijalingam spoke about how cases continue to be filed against the water tanker owners. The rains as well as mild weather in the Chennai city have lowered the water demand and it has dropped by 30 to 40% in the last few months. It is important to note that about 4500 lorrys are operated in Chennai and each of them now do 3 to 4 trips. To face the impending water crisis, resident welfare associations in OMR and ECR are chalking out strategies. The residents of these places depend mostly on these private water tankers is known.

Subha Srikanth, vice-president of Olympia Opaline Flat Owner’s Association, Navalur expressed her thoughts. She spoke about how 10% of their needs are met by the groundwater and treated waste water from sewage treatment plant. She shed light on the purchase of 20 tanker loads of water every day. Finally she hinted that if the water tankers go on strike then rationing of water would be done and the residents would be asked to buy drinking water.

Water stress in the apartments along the OMR or Rajiv Gandhi Salai has been reduced by the saving of rain water in the last few days. It was later pointed out by Mr. Harsha Koda, coordinator, Federation of OMR Residents Association or FOMRRA that the situation was not as tough as it was in the peak summer.
