From Monday, 8th July 2019, onwards metro water would start drawing water from the 5 quarries in Erumaiyur located near Tambaram in Chennai. Information collected is water that is now being drawn from the Sikkarayapuram quarries would be stopped on Sunday.

Till the end of the month of November, water from Erumaiyur, Veeranam, Neyveli wells and farm wells in Thiruvallur could supply water to Chennai city. It was brought out by the sources belonging to the metro water department that by that time the northeast monsoon would set in.

On 13th May 2019, the preparatory work in the quarries belonging to Erumaiyur started and it was completed on 28th of June 2019. This was as per a senior official of metro water department. He explained about how laying pipelines and installing pumping machines were the two major components of the project. He expressed his happiness about the work that would be completed in just 45 days of time. It must be noted that the agency has spent an amount of Rs 19.17 crores in setting up the infrastructure so that water could be drawn from the quarries.

It is now revealed that the metro water would pump the water to the Chembarambakkam based treatment plant and then the water would be supplied to one lakh households in Mogappair and Ambattur. Point is 10 mld of water would be drawn by the metro water department for a time of 50 days.

It was later mentioned by an official of metro water department that water from Sikkarayapuram quarries would have been stopped couple of days back itself but some water has been left. The metro water department wants to use that remaining water now. On Sunday, the supply of water from the Sikkarayapuram quarries would be stopped.

In the beginning, 30 mld water was drawn from the Sikkarayapuram quarries is known. The high temperatures have evaporated the water in the quarries. As a result, now metro water department has been forced to reduce the quantity to 20 mld in the month of June. The metro water department had recently identified new quarries in Keerapakkam near Vandalur and at Moovarasanpet as a possible water sources is known.

Important point to be noted is Keerapakkam quarry is present in the interior areas and the other quarry does not have good quality water in it. It is said that the department of metro water would take a final decision regarding drawing water from these 2 quarries.
