Now 6 months of dry spell in Chennai broken after sudden rains on Thursday

For more than 6 months in Chennai city, there has been no rainfall is well known to us. On Thursday, 20th June, residents of Chennai were very happy and surprised because of sudden rains that lashed many parts of Chennai. It is now predicted by the meteorological department that Chennai city might experience thunderstorms in the next few days of time.

Point is social media was buzzing yesterday as the residents of Chennai updated about the rain in their places and their happiness regarding this rain after many months. In the afternoon many places in Chennai such as Guindy, Sholinganallur, Medavakkam, Meenambakkam, Porur,Nungambakkam and Neelankarai got light rains.

It must be noted that the rain gauges of the meteorological department at Kolapakkam recorded 3 cm of rainfall and rain gauges in Poonamallee and Sathyabhama University recorded 2 cm of rainfall.

A resident belonging to Nanganallur expressed his thoughts regarding the rain. He spoke about how around 3:30 pm it had started raining in his locality and how many people came out of their homes to have fun in the rains plus to have the smell of damp earth. Those people who were in their offices also enjoyed the rainfall yesterday.

Point is weather station in Nungambakkam did not record any rainfall till 6 pm.The favourable wind pattern was responsible for the rains yesterday and this was confirmed by the official belonging to the meteorological department. It is worthy to note that Chennai recorded a day temperature of 40.7 degree Celsius.

Monsoon activity was accelerated by the low pressure that has formed over the Bay of Bengal. This was as per Mr. Puviarasan who is the director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre. The superb piece of news is from Friday, 21st June there would be dip in the day temperature.

In the next few days, there are more chances of development of thunderstorms in Chennai and its neighbourhood places. It is now revealed that the districts along the Western Ghats like Nilgris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Theni and Tirunelveli would get moderate rains till Saturday.

Mr. Puviarasan later spoke about how during the weekend few parts of the above mentioned districts might get heavy rainfall. It should be noted that Chennai city recorded trace rainfall so far since the month of January. On 28th February 2019, Chennai’s important places like Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 2mm of rainfall. This was as per Mr. Srikanth who is a weather blogger.
