Soon Chennai Corporation to do this to reduce acute water crisis

Chennai Corporation would soon be trying to provide a solution to reduce the acute water crisis in the city of Chennai. It is now brought out that the Corporation of Chennai would improve the storage capacity of the 210 water bodies by plugging sewage outfalls and removing encroachments. Point to be taken into account is the senior officials belonging to the corporation of Chennai began inspecting tank eco-restoration projects across Chennai in this week.

It was mentioned by a civic official that the storage of 210 tanks would increase from 0.312 TMC to 1.041 TMC. The storage capacity would be improved by 500 percent by the Villivakkam tank eco-restoration. It is said that the encroachments in many water bodies have affected the eco-restoration project. Information collected is the officials are yet to remove any encroachments identified along the water bodies.

It was pointed out by an official that the construction of 3026 houses has reduced the sizes of as many as 32 water bodies. The important point is the total extent of 210 water bodies managed by Chennai Corporation is 9.67 sq km and most of them have reduced in area now. The revenue authorities concerned have not properly surveyed the encroachments on 178 out of 210 water bodies. In many residential places in Chennai, the encroachers have been letting sewage in storm water drains. Most of the water bodies have been polluted now.

For the past few years, the residents of the encroached property have been demanding patta from the revenue authorities. This was mainly in a bid to get proper planning permission and sewage connections. In short time, work on increasing the storage capacities of as many as 70 water bodies would be completed and this was as per the officials of the corporation.

At a cost of Rs 20 crores, Chennai Corporation has taken up eco-restoration projects in 53 water bodies now. In as many as in 38 areas, residents associations and corporate have taken the eco-restoration projects of tanks is known. The officials have now assured that the work on the eco-restoration of 100 water bodies would be taken up shortly.
