In Chennai, KWMC or Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex is highly popular and many people go and purchase vegetables in this market are known. Hence it is normal that this place would always be crowded.

Last year efforts to introduce order began to keep this Koyambedu market neat and clean. It is now said that encroachments that were removed 45 days back have come back once again. Not only that piles of waste get bigger and bigger here and the conservancy workers are finding it difficult to clear the waste. Koyambedu market has become mess once again and people are finding it difficult.

Mr. S. Rajendran, administrative officer of KWMC assumed office in February 2018 is known. He took many steps to remove the encroachments plus regulate traffic. The sad news is in the month of January 2019 the government transferred him out of Koyambedu market. In all the 3 blocks, vendors have set up their shops now. It must be noted that these shops were closed but have come back once again due to poor vigilance.

A worker in a vegetable shop in this market spoke about how few months ago these violators were afraid of entering the market as immediate action was taken and how the violators are happy now.

The point is traffic inside the Koyambedu market has gone out of control. From different parts of TN and from other neighboring states, as many as 500 trucks with 325 trucks carrying vegetables and 125 trucks carrying fruits enter this popular market in Chennai every day.

A loader spoke about how the regulations were brought and how truck movement was controlled. This had benefited many load men. He also revealed the difficulties involved in taking the sacks on their backs till the gate or outside for loading due to the fact that customer vehicles do not get any space to enter the market. He was unhappy regarding moving with heavy sack on the back. The main point to be noted is there is no cleanliness at all in this important market in Chennai now and this is due to slack in the administration.
