Getting a MBBS seat is not an easy task. It requires lots of hard work, dedication, determination etc. Many government school students aspire for MBBS seats but only few succeed. The latest news is only four students from government schools have secured MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu. In the last year just 2 students from government schools got MBBS seats is known. It is now brought out that the students from the government schools have got 0.16 % of the available MBBS seats in this year. There are as many as22 state run medical colleges in TN and these colleges offer 2447 MBBS seats for the students. In the year 2016 government school students securing MBBS seats grabbed many eyeballs. In that year 30 students from government schools got MBBS seats.

A mop-up counselling would take place on 23rd of August 2018 for the 2 seats available in the government medical colleges in TN. When compared to MBBS admissions in TN in the year 2016, now there is a steep fall of 80% in the admissions. This was confirmed by a data released by the state selection committee. The important point here is the students belonging to government aided schools in TN have done better this year and as many as 26 students have got MBBS seats.

Dr. Ravindranath, general secretary, Doctors of Social Equality, expressed his views. He spoke about how NEET is responsible for section of students who cannot pay high fees collected under the management quota or in the deemed universities. He later added that the government school students cannot compete with the students from the private schools. A biology teacher of class 12 spoke her heart out and said there were errors in the Tamil question papers and it was a huge problem. She later threw light on how 49 questions were wrong and how the high court’s order to give 196 additional marks was turned down by the Supreme Court.

State committee plays a huge role in the admission process for all the medical and dental courses and this is based on NEET 2018 marks.  It is clear that admissions to MBBS courses in 2018 were tough when compared to 2017. In 2017, last student from reserved category to enter state run medical college in TN scored 161 but in 2018 it was 200 in NEET.

Mr. G. Selvarajan, selection committee secretary, highlighted that in 2018 half the number of students admitted to MBBS courses were break year students who have completed their class 12 previously. As many as 1680 students passed class 12 in 2017 and 120 students passed class 12 in 2016. He also added that nearly 51% of the students took break to better their NEET scores. Writing NEET for the second time is the new trend for those students aspiring for MBBS seats. In 2018, NEET topper scored 676 marks is known. This is 20 marks more than the marks scored in 2017 in NEET. There were 80 students who scored more than 550 marks in both 2017 and 2018.
