Repairing of the roads in Chennai to be done by the corporation

Ahead of the coming monsoon season the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would repair all the roads. It is known that the roads are left in bad condition by the internet service providers who dug up the roads to lay optical fibre cables. As many as 1189 interior roads plus 420 bus route roads have been dug up for the sake of laying cables in 15 zones in Chennai. Soon a tender would be floated by the civic body to repair the above mentioned roads in Chennai. Total charges collected from telecom providers in 2018 to lay cables is Rs 30 crores and this was till the month of July. The sources belonging to the civic body have confirmed this now.
There were some complaints by the residents of Shanthi Colony in Anna Nagar that inspite of works being completed by a telecom company the roads were still not re-laid. The footpaths were dug up to erect poles to connect the cables. Two slabs were laid by the telecom company and roads were dug up and left. It is now said that both the slabs caved in the recent rains. An official of Chennai Corporation spoke about how the work to repair roads would be done collectively across all the stretches where the cable laying works were completed. He then spoke about the tenders to be floated to repair these roads. The official said that an amount of Rs 3.5 crore was sanctioned for repairing of interior roads and an amount of Rs 2.6 crores for bus route roads.
Municipal administration and water supplies department passed a government order in 2014. As per the order the road charges were fixed at Rs 32450 per km per annum subject to an annual increase of 10%. Metro water has been laying underground pipelines for water and sewerage works in some extended areas. The residents belonging to these extended areas said the work should be expedited and the roads should be repaired at the earliest.
A resident of Sholinganallur spoke about how the metro water works have been going on for many years and how the roads would be repaired only when these works get completed.
