Only 58% seats in the engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu were filled up through counselling. There are 1.20 lakh seats lying vacant. Now a situation has risen that the engineering colleges are likely to be sold out.

There are 583 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University. There are 2 lakhs 89 thousand 939 BE, B Tech and B Arch seats in these colleges.

In the private self financing engineering colleges, students were admitted under the management quota and the classes have begun for the academic year. In this situation, out of 2.89 lakh seats only 1 lakh 69 thousand 680 seats have been filled up. That is only 58% of the seats have been filled up. Now 1 Lakh 20 thousand 259 seats are lying vacant. This includes private institution also.

In the 533 private self financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu only 1 lakh 57 thousand 45 students were admitted in the colleges. The seats available in these 533 private colleges were 2 Lakhs 74 thousand and 739 seats. Apart from Tamil Nadu, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the technical education regulator has mentioned that 16.90 lakhs seats are lying vacant nationwide. Hence AICTE may reduce over 600,000 engineering seats in colleges over the next few years over concerns about the dismal quality of education across India.

A Rangarajan who was former Principal of an engineering college while speaking about the selling of colleges said, "There are many engineering colleges in Coimbatore and Kancheepuram. Some big educational institutions are now indirectly bargaining with some of the colleges. An engineering college can be sold between Rs 30 Crores to Rs 100 Crores. In spite of this there are only few takers. The reason for this is increasing administrative expenses. Another reason attributed to this is unemployment problem. In view of many reasons the engineering colleges are for sale."
