Metro Rail Project – Tunnelling work between Washermanpet & High Court completed

The Chennai Metro Rail Project authorities have informed that the tunnelling work between Washermanpet & High Court has been completed.
The tunnel between Washermanpet & High Court is 2 km long. Tunnelling work for the double track is complete.
The construction of the Railway Station has commenced and this is being expedited.14.3 km tunnelling between Saidapet & Washermanpet and 9.7 km tunnelling work between Central & Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue are planned.
The Metro Rail stretch between Egmore & Washermanpet will be in tunnel. Tunnelling work was commenced last year and 2 tunnels have been constructed between Egmore & Washermanpet.2 giant-sized tunnel boring machines are used.
Overall, 16 km of tunnelling has been completed. The balance work of 8 km tunnelling is carried out in full swing and is being expedited for early completion.
12 giant-size tunnel boring machines are used in the project. Companies from France, China, and Hong Kong are taking part in the project.
Tunnels are being dug 20 metres below the ground level (17 metres below the road). The tunnel diameter is 6.2 metres. The drinking water and the sewage pipes will not be affected. 5 to 6 metres of tunneling is done in a day.
