The day is also auspicious to Lord Muruga. Important rituals on the day include performing rites for dead ancestors in sacred Teerths and riverbanks and also taking a holy dip in sacred rivers and spots.
● In the Hindu tradition, Aadi Amavasai is a day considered very sacred to observe obsequies for the departed souls of our close relatives. This special day is dedicated to our (pitrus) forefathers, which is observed annually during the Tamil month of July.The new moon in the Tamil month of Aadi is observed with special prayers, poojas and offering of food to the forefathers. Amavasai is a new moon begins its new cycle. This year Aadi Amavasai falls on July 26th, Sat which starts at 5.32am and ends on July 27th, Sun at 7.20am

It is also widely believed by Muruga devotees that one will be purified and all sins will be washed away by taking a holy dip in the Shanmuga River in Palani on the Aadi Amavasya day.As a mark of respect and thanksgiving people also tonsure their head at Palani Muruga Temple on the day.
