In an all new dimension and perspective about obesity, researchers have identified the link between environment pollution and it.

The study was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Granada in Spain. According to the study results, it was found that those living in highly polluted areas are prone to higher levels of cholesterol and triglycerides level regardless of their gender, age, locality or other lifestyle habits including smoking.

The research involved analyzing pollution levels accumulated in the individual’s adipose tissue. It involved studying it in 300 men and women. Substances analyzed during the study are termed Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). These remain in the environment for years together, in fact more than decades without getting degraded.

According to leading author Juan Pedro Arrebola, the primary reason or exposure to such POPs is dieting habit. These get accumulated in body fat. He also claimed that those with POPs in higher levels were comparatively obese and had high levels of triglycerides. These contribute to the increased level of risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition to food habits, such high levels of cholesterol are also due to exposure to chemicals like obesogenic.
