Chennai police warns bank officials to step up security at ATMs

Posted on: 04/Dec/2013 11:52:15 AM
Against the backdrop of the brutal November 19 attack on a woman bank manager in an ATM centre in Bangalore, the city police on Tuesday urged bank officials to enhance security at ATM booths before December 31. A meeting was organized by the police officials in which the bank officials participated.

Bank officials at the meeting were issued several instructions with regard to crimes within and outside banks and ATM centres. There are more than 3,000 ATMs in the city and it is the responsibility of the respective banks to ensure safety of customers coming to these places, a senior police officer said. "We have asked officials to not only install closed circuit television cameras within ATM centres or banks but also outside them," he said.

The banks were advised to employ armed security guards, especially retired army men, and to ensure that only one person used an ATM booth at any given time to avoid any untoward incident.

A system in which the ATM booth doors open after identifying the card should be in place. Banks should install cameras and ensure they are continuously monitored, police said adding that several other security concerns were also discussed.

Another meeting was also held with several private security agencies where police advised the representatives to check the antecedents of the employees before employing them. Men from both inside and outside the state should obtain antecedents certificates from the police station concerned. Senior police officers pointed out that most security guards at ATM booths in the city were from North India and those agencies employing them did so without verifying their background.
