Near Chennai Central Railway Station stands the majestic Victoria Public Hall, one of the city’s most iconic heritage buildings. Built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, the red-brick structure is located between Chennai Central and the Ripon Building, the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

In the 19th century, European cities commonly built “Town Halls” where civic leaders met to discuss administrative matters. These halls were also used for important public functions and receptions when official meetings were not taking place.

Although cities like Calcutta and Bombay already had Town Halls, Madras-despite being a major city under British rule-did not have one until the late 19th century.

As the need for a public venue grew, plans were made to construct a Town Hall in Madras. However, unlike other cities, the Madras Corporation was already functioning from a building on Errabalu Street. Therefore, the Victoria Public Hall was designed mainly as a venue for grand public gatherings, cultural programmes, and important civic events.

Over the years, the hall became a cultural landmark of Chennai and remains closely linked to the city’s rich history and heritage.
