Ahead of the Pongal festival, a massive travel rush has been witnessed across Tamil Nadu, with 6.90 lakh passengers travelling in government buses between January 9 and last night (12 midnight). Continuous holidays and festive celebrations have led to heavy crowds at bus stands and railway stations.
Pongal is one of the most important festivals for Tamilians, celebrated not only in Tamil Nadu but also by Tamils across the world. This year, Bhogi is celebrated on January 14, followed by Thai Pongal on January 15, and Mattu Pongal (Uzhavar Thirunal) on January 16. With Saturday and Sunday following, people are enjoying five consecutive holidays.
Heavy Travel Rush from Chennai
Due to the long holiday stretch, people working in Chennai and other urban areas are travelling to their native places. From Wednesday evening onwards, passengers have been leaving the city in large numbers using buses, trains, and private vehicles, though the majority depend on public transport.
As a result:
- Severe crowding was reported at Egmore and Tambaram railway stations, especially on trains bound for southern districts
- Passengers rushed to board unreserved coaches, leading to overcrowding
- Police personnel were deployed to manage crowds and prevent stampede-like situations
Special Bus Services for Pongal
To handle the surge in passengers:
- 2.02 lakh people travelled in government buses on Thursday alone
- Along with 2,092 regular buses, an additional 2,238 special buses are being operated across the state
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as festive travel peaks ahead of Pongal celebrations.
