Marina Beach is one of Chennai’s most important recreational destinations, attracting lakhs of visitors every day. To ensure safety and inclusivity for all sections of society, the Greater Chennai Corporation has been intensifying development and welfare initiatives along the beachfront.
For years, homeless people, beggars, and elderly individuals have been sleeping on the Marina beach sand and nearby inner roads during the night, exposing them to unsafe conditions. Following concerns raised about their safety, the Chennai Corporation has decided to establish a dedicated night shelter for the homeless at Marina Beach.
Accordingly, a new night shelter has been constructed near Anna Square on Marina Beach, covering an area of 2,400 square feet at a cost of ₹86.20 lakh. Construction work has been completed, and additional works such as footpaths and compound walls are currently underway. The facility is expected to be opened for public use by the end of this month.
The shelter, located behind the Anna Square bus stand, can accommodate up to 80 people. Basic amenities including mats, pillows, blankets, toilets, and other essential facilities have been provided. The maintenance and management of the shelter will be handled by a private non-governmental organization (NGO).
In addition, the Chennai Corporation has decided to provide dinner to shelter residents through Amma Canteens, ensuring food security for the homeless. Officials stated that the initiative aims to improve safety, dignity, and welfare for homeless individuals who frequent Marina Beach at night.
