The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to begin work in January 2026 on a 3-km-long flyover connecting Five Furlong Road and Guru Nanak College in Velachery, aimed at easing the persistent traffic congestion near Phoenix Marketcity.
According to officials, soil investigation for the ₹310-crore project will commence by the end of this month after finalizing the contractor. The three-lane flyover, 11 metres wide, will run from a point 300 metres from the Sardar Patel Road–Velachery Main Road junction to the Velachery Bypass, covering Racecourse Road, Five Furlong Road, and Velachery Bypass junctions.
To improve traffic movement, uni-directional down ramps are planned on Five Furlong Road and near Guru Nanak College. The project will also include 5.5-m-wide service roads and 1.5-m-wide footpaths on both sides.
As per a recent traffic study, the Five Furlong Road junction recorded 7,459 passenger car units/hr, and the Guru Nanak College junction saw 7,742 pcu/hr during peak hours, confirming the need for improved traffic infrastructure in the area.
The GCC will acquire 191 sq.m. of private land and 461 sq.m. of government land for the project.
However, not all residents are convinced. Subha Murali, a resident of Velachery, remarked, “This flyover won’t solve the congestion issue. It might worsen it as mall-goers could use the underbridge for parking. The focus should be on removing encroachments and widening existing roads.”
