The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that the first section of its much-awaited Phase II project the Poonamallee to Porur stretch will be operational by December 2025.
The ambitious project, costing ₹63,246 crore, will add 116 km of metro lines across three key corridors, with full completion targeted for 2028.
Key Timeline Highlights
Dec 2025: Poonamallee Porur stretch with six-coach driverless trains.
June 2026: Porur Kodambakkam and Koyambedu–Nandanam links.
March 2027: Madhavaram Sholinganallur IT corridor stretch.
Fleet & Technology
- 138 trains in total, including 32 driverless trains.
- Dedicated metro rail workshops under construction at Madhavaram and Poonamallee to support operations.
CMRL officials confirmed that construction is progressing rapidly across the Madhavaram–SIPCOT, Poonamallee–Light House, and Madhavaram–Manappakkam routes. Once completed, Phase II is expected to transform Chennai’s urban mobility and provide a lasting solution to the city’s traffic congestion.
