A ₹2.5 lakh crore Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) has been approved for the Chennai Metropolitan Area, creating a 25-year roadmap to expand and integrate the city’s transport network.
The plan includes:
- Expansion of Chennai Metro from 172 km to 444 km by 2048
- A 152 km light rail network
- 182 km of new suburban rail corridors and upgrades to 126 km of existing lines
- A 438 km Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)
Projects are divided into short, medium, and long-term phases. Around ₹75,976 crore will be invested by 2030, mainly for public transport expansion.
The CMP promotes sustainable mobility, encouraging public transport, walking, and cycling, while aiming to reduce private vehicle use and emissions.
As part of the plan, a new QR-based ticketing system called “One City, One Ticket” will allow passengers to travel across buses, metro, and suburban trains with a single digital ticket.
The Chennai One Mobility App will support this system, helping commuters plan journeys, track services in real time, and buy tickets online in Tamil, English, Telugu, and Hindi.
