Have you come across abandoned vehicles on the roads in Chennai?
In Chennai, abandoned vehicles have been a thorn in the flesh. Bitter fact is that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has been taking huge efforts to remove the abandoned vehicles in Chennai despite the GCC efforts these vehicles have been causing issues for the residents.
In the 2024-25 Corporation budget, Chennai Mayor R. Priya announced the abandoned vehicles removal drive. As a result, GCC removed as many as 836 abandoned vehicles in the last 6 months. As the vehicles obstruct traffic as well as pedestrian movements, the GCC has asked the people not to leave their vehicles parked for a long time on the Chennai roads.
Prime places in Chennai where more number of abandoned vehicles has been creating issues for the public are T. Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, Velachery, 100 Feet Road, College Road, Wall Tax Road and M.C. Road. It is worthy to note that the GCC hasn`t yet auctioned the seized vehicles like two wheelers, cars, autos and buses but just shifted these vehicles to the yards located in Shenoy Nagar, Pallikaranai, Choolai and Kodungaiyur etc.
It was later brought out by a resident belonging to Prakasam Road in T. Nagar that many vehicles have been parked even for many months together. He added that inspite of his complaints no action has been taken till now regarding this.
According to Mr. S. Venkat, member of Voice of North Chennai Residents Welfare Association it was clear that MC Road has been reduced to a dumping ground for vehicles thieves. He spoke about how the Chennai Corporation hasn`t taken any steps to complete the proposed pedestrian plaza. He added that some 100 vehicles have been parked on the road for more than a year. It must be noted that the interior roads near the famous Stanley Hospital in north Chennai have many abandoned vehicles now. Pavements have also been taken up by these vehicles and this has caused issues to the public.
It was later explained by GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran that the corporation must get approval from the Chennai traffic police for auctioning the seized vehicles. He added that normally 15 days would be provided for the vehicle owners to remove to make a claim. He concluded that the corporation would organise a drive to remove the abandoned vehicles across Chennai.
