Highways Research Institute Premises in Guindy was busy with a lot of activities yesterday. The reason for that was the chief minister of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin made his presence felt here.
The chief minister inaugurated the State Highways Authority at the Highways Research Institute premises yesterday. He also inaugurated the Kalaignar Centenary building.
It is noteworthy that this Kalaignar Centenary building was constructed at a cost of Rs 19 cr as a part of capacity building of the Highways Department under the financial component of Chennai Kanniyakumari industrial project implemented from the assistance from Asian Development Bank at the premises of the Highways Research Institute in Guindy.
Details about the new Kalaignar Centenary building:
It is worth mentioning here that this building has been constructed over a vast land area of 5546.50 sq m. It has 3 floors and is equipped with a lift facility also.
The objective behind the formation of a new TN State Highways Authority was to expedite various road development works including 6-lane highways- expressways and implementing road works at various modes such as public and private participation. In addition to these, improving road infrastructure in TN to world class standards was also an objective behind the formation of a new TN State Highway authority. The logo was also unveiled by the chief minister.
Functions of the new authority:
It is learnt that this new authority would work towards implementing projects with advanced technologies, high quality controls within specified timeframe and budget. Not only the expectations of the road users would be met but it would also lead to economic growth and industrial development. The State Highways would be linked to the local road network and due to this the public would be able to reach their destinations quickly. By this, road accessibility would increase and economic growth would be promoted in Tamil Nadu.

Velu public works minister, Mr. Raghupathy, natural resources minister, Mr. K. R. Periyakaruppan, cooperatives minister, Mr. R.S. Rajakannappan, forest and forestry minister, Mr. M. Subramanian, health minister, Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Mahesh Kumar, Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, public works secretary Mr. Selvaraj, Highways secretary, Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Board chief executive Pooja Kulkarni, Highways chief engineers and senior officers etc.
