To address the growing traffic congestion in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the construction of a new flyover on Velachery Main Road. This 3 kilometre stretch will connect Sardar Patel Road Junction in Guindy to Guru Nanak College Junction in Velachery. Announced in the 2025–26 state budget, the project is estimated to benefit over 7 lakh people in the surrounding areas.
Although the initial estimated cost was Rs 310 crore, the Chennai Corporation has now floated tenders for Rs 231 crore. The flyover will be constructed as a four lane road, with two lanes each for traffic moving towards Guindy and Velachery, with a total width of 12 meters. The proposed design is a T shaped structure, and around 1,100 square meters of land must be acquired for the project.
The new flyover is expected to significantly ease the bottleneck caused by vehicles returning from Velachery 100 Feet Road towards Phoenix Mall. Once construction begins, officials estimate the project will take around two years to complete. If the land acquisition and tender processes proceed without delays, the bridge is expected to be ready by 2027, offering much needed relief to daily commuters in the area.
