Mostly, summer seasons would be associated with water scarcity or lack of enough water, but this summer would be different for the residents belonging to Chennai.
The good news is that the residents need not worry about the water scarcity problem this summer. The reservoirs in Chennai have 8.5 TMC water and the average need for drinking water is about one TMC in the city. This was according to an official belonging to CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
From the Nemmeli desalination plant, CMWSSB is pumping 250 million litres of water and in another 20 day Chennai would get water from Krishna River. He mentioned that all is well for the Chennai and its neighbourhood residents in this summer season regarding water supply. It is learnt that the surface water available would help the residents to manage this summer.
All the water reservoirs that supply drinking water to Chennai like Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Cholavaram and Redhills are 50% full now. This was as per the CMWSSB website. Moreover, the total water capacity of Chennai is now 8.5TMC against the full capacity of 13 TMC.
It is worth mentioning that at the end of April month Poondi reservoir had 2.03 TMC water, Cholavaram TMC had 1.4TMC, Redhills 2.8TMC and Chembarambakkm had 2.5TMC.
To meet the drinking water demand in the tail end areas in Chennai, additional water tankers would be pressed into service. Arrangements have been made by Chennai Metro Water.
