The superb piece of news is that the Madurantakam tank present in the Chengalpet district would be restored by July 2025. It is well known to us that this tank is one of the largest and ancient water bodies in the district. The storage capacity of this tank would be enhanced. The restoration of Madurantakam tank is now in the final stages.
Restoration work details:
In 1798, this tank was first restored during British rule by the collector Mr. Lionel Place. This lake is spread over an area of nearly 1058 hectares and is now undergoing restoration at a cost of Rs 172.6 cr. Point is that nearly 86percent of the restoration works have been completed.
In June 2022, the restoration works began here. It was brought to light by the officers belonging to WRD or Water Resources Department that the height of the 5 weirs has been increased by 0.5m to improve the storage capacity from 694mcft to 791 mcft. It must be taken into account that weir is a structure that would allow excess water to flow out.
Point to be noted is that the lake has storage of nearly 325mcft and is used to irrigate about 1154 hectares of land through sluices. Spillway has replaced the sixth weir and the spillway is a dam-like structure with as many as 12 shutters. By this, controlled release of floodwater when the tank reaches full capacity would be possible. This was as per some official from WRD.
