In a significant boost to North Chennai and efforts to combat pollution in the Adyar river, the government launched two major projects on Thursday. The North Chennai Developmental Project, costing Rs 4,181 crore, aims at comprehensive development in the area. Key departments like the Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, Metro Water, and School Education, Fisheries, and Sports Development are collaborating on this initiative.

Under this plan, specific infrastructure projects have been outlined, including the reconstruction of Parrys Corner bus terminal (Rs 823 crore), Kodungaiyur biomining (Rs 640 crore), low-cost housing, smart classrooms, playgrounds, road widening, and beautification of Tiruvottiyur beach, and enhancements to the Kasimedu fishing harbor.

Simultaneously, the government approved the Rs 4,800 crore Adyar River Restoration Project, targeting the 44-km-long river`s rejuvenation. Special purpose vehicles involving public and private firms will be formed for this endeavor. The project aims to recycle 100 to 110 million liters of sewage daily, rejuvenating the highly polluted river.

Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena will chair the project, with a senior IAS officer overseeing its progress. The restoration efforts include bank strengthening, sewage treatment plant setup, and the creation of parks, gardens, pathways, and green spaces for conservation. Works are slated to commence immediately post Lok Sabha polls.
