Skyrocketing vegetable prices in Chennai are making residents unhappy now!!

Last month, in Tamil Nadu and in the neighbouring states, there was a dry spell and it led to low supply of vegetables due to crop damage. Now, the prices of vegetables have gone very high in Chennai. This has made the residents unhappy.

Now, vegetables like beans, broad beans, drumstick, ginger etc cost around Rs 70 to Rs 120 per kg. It is now said that the prices of the vegetables would continue to increase in the next 15 days due to an increase in the supply of vegetables. Truth is that the SW monsoon would be bringing rains in TN.

In the past few weeks, dry weather was witnessed in states like TN, AP, Karnataka etc and due to that the prices of vegetables have increased by 20% to 25% at the famous Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai. The dry weather played a part in the damage of the crops. It must be noted that during the second crop cultivation there would be supply shortage.

As the situation became worse in TN, the price of ginger was unimaginably high of Rs 2000 per kg for the first time. In the last 2 days, the price of ginger has come down to Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg. This was according to Mr. P. Sukumaran, secretary of Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association.

When compared to the usual supply of 430 to 450 loads of vegetables, the market at koyambedu received just 370 to 380 vehicles of commodities. The market sales have been affected by the increasing cost of perishable commodity prices. The purchasing capacity of the customers also has changed now  and this was brought out by Mr. P. Sukumaran. Information is that the retail vendors who used to buy 50kgs are now buying just 20kg to 25kg. The business of the wholesale traders have been affected.

Currently at the Koyambedu market, beans are sold for Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg, broad beans for Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg, drumstick for Rs 100 to Rs 110 per kg, peas at Rs 200 per kg, onions Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg etc.
