The intensity of summer heat has been increasing in several cities in the state of Tamil Nadu. A maximum temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded in Vellore the day before yesterday (Monday, 15th May).

The Indian Meteorological Centre had earlier announced that the same conditions will prevail.

In this situation, temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded yesterday (Tuesday, 16th May) in 18 cities in Tamil Nadu. A maximum temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded in Chennai Metro City Meenambakkam.

Thiruthani, Chennai Nungambakkam, and Vellore recorded 107 degrees Fahrenheit each. Karur Paramathi, Madurai Airport, and Parangipettai recorded 105 degrees Fahrenheit each.

Cuddalore, Erode, and Trichy recorded 104 degrees Fahrenheit each. Madurai City and Nagapattinam recorded 103 degrees Fahrenheit each. Palayamkottai, Salem, and Thanjavur recorded 102 degrees Fahrenheit each. Namakkal and Thirupathur recorded 101 degrees Fahrenheit each. Dharmapuri recorded 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The temperature in Puducherry and Karaikal was also recorded at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. With the scorching summer, vehicle drivers faced severe hardship.

In this regard, an official from the Chennai Meteorological Centre shared:

"Dry Ground Breeze is blowing across from the Northwest to Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, the Sun`s rays are falling directly on Tamil Nadu`s land area!

There was a change in the wind direction due to cyclone Mocha, which developed over the Bay of Bengal. Additionally, the eastern wind from the sea had also stopped blowing. The sea breeze also sets in rather late. Consequently, the intensity of the heat is very high and quite unbearable!"

The temperature may increase further by 4 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will be higher than normal by 2-4 degrees Celsius in a few places on the 17th & 18th of May (Wednesday & Thursday – today & tomorrow). When the temperature is high and humidity is also high, there are prospects for heat pressure to occur.

Chennai Metro City and its suburbs may face a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius, as informed by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre.
