Cyclone Mandous LIVE updates

  • Cyclone Mandous - Rain filled and windy one which was enjoyable as it did not cause any major damage. Pull effect rains from tomorrow. Mandous crossed the coast without any major destruction and recorded wind speeds in City was 70-75 km/hr 

    Maybe near the landfall areas in Mahabs, Kelambakkam, the wind speeds would been much higher and closer to 90 km/hr.  The centre cloud fell over the Kancheepuram-Panapakkam-Vembakkam stretch - 250 mm in vembakkam, 198 mm in Panapakkam and Kancheepuram 185 mm.

    In Tiruvallur 170 mm in Avadi and Aynavaram 150 mm in Chennai.
    Today - Bangalore, Tirupattur Krishagiri  will get rains from Mandu
    KTCC - From Tomorrow Pull effect rains for KTCC is there for 2 days and many other parts of Tamil Nadu.

  • The electric train service between Chennai and Beach Velachery has been cancelled due to a technical fault near the Chepakkam Railway station caused by Storm Mandous !

    Due to tree fall caused by storm Mandous  and maintenance work, the park will only be closed for one day.

  • A Meteorological Department report says cyclone Mandous is about 110 km from Chennai.

  • The Chennai East Coast Road has been closed due to Cyclone Mandous .

  • As Cyclone Mandous makes landfall near Mamallapuram, the wind speed will be 70 to 80 kph - MET Director Balachandran 

  • More rain clouds approaching  Chennai coast  Cyclone Mandous as the system is 130 kms southeast of Mahabalipuram.



  • Schools and colleges of following districts in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Saturday (December 10) due to forecast of heavy rain in the wake of cyclone Mandous. The collectors of the respective districts declared the holiday.

  • As Cyclone Mandous reaches landfall, metro rail traffic remains unchanged. Metro train service will operate normally from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

  • 25 flights were cancelled due to the monsoon storm.

    After Cyclone Mandous, 25 flights were cancelled at Chennai International Airport.
    Flights to Tuticorin, Mysore, Kozhikode, Vijayawada, Bengaluru, Trichy, Madurai, Hyderabad, Hubli, and Kannur, among other places, have been cancelled.

  • Chennai Metro City buses WILL NOT RUN tonight Effect of Cyclone Mandous!

    It has been announced that the buses of Chennai Metro City Transport buses will not operate due to the persistent downpour caused by the cyclone Mandous

    It may be noted that usually, around 550 buses operate in the night period and due to the inclement weather, these are cancelled tonight (Friday, 9th December)!

  • Mandous Cyclone ECHO: Express buses cancelled!

    Due to the heavy downpour and the high-speed winds caused by the cyclone Mandous, the government express buses from Pudhuchery via East Coast Road to Chennai and Karaikkal are CANCELLED!

    Pudhuchery Transport Corporation has announced that these buses will resume operation as soon as the cyclone Mandous crosses the coast

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Update : Cyclone Mandous weakened into a cyclonic storm about 180 km north-east of Karaikal to cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota around Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) during midnight of Dec 9 to early hours of Dec 10.
  • In the interest of public:
    Those who venture out due to necessity in motorcycle please avoid  using umbrella but use rain coat.  Also avoid stopping under trees, dilapidated and damaged buildings, advertisement boards and transformers if they happen to stop.

  • Severe Cyclone Mandous currently lies 245kms SSE of Chennai. Landfall is expected near Mahabs later tonight.

    Intermittent rains continue over Chennai and this shall increase by the afternoon. Office goers must take WFH or try start back to home by the afternoon.

  • So far, 7 flights have been cancelled in Chennai owing to a storm warning.

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Latest Update :

    Cyclone Mandous lay over the southwest Bay of Bengal about 270km ESE of Karaikal. It will move west northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the adjoining south AP coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota with a windspeed of 65-75 kmph around midnight of December 9.



  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall warning with gust wind up to 85 kmph possible next 24 hours in Chennai 

  • ALERT: North Tamilnadu and Puducherry should be on high alert mode next 24 hours as forecasts suggest heavy rainfall with wind speed touching 100 kmph (IMD says a little less).

  •  Severe  Cyclone Mandous 440 km SE of Chennai. It is very likely to maintain its intensity till the early morning of 9th Dec and then weaken gradually into a cyclone by the forenoon of 9th Dec.



  • Municipal parks are closed as a precaution!

  • At 14:30 hours (IST) today, December 8, 2022, the cyclonic storm "Mandous" was centered about 390 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 480 km southeast of Chennai, moving at 12 kmph.


  • By evening, Mandous is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm
  • Appeal for precautionary guidelines for the Public to follow given cyclone Mandous! Appeal to the public:

    • To buy essential items – milk, vegetables, etc., well before!
    • Not to venture a trip to the beach!
    •  Don`t stand under the trees when the strong high-speed wind is flowing!
    • Avoid being near any water resources
    • Avoid taking `selfies` when strong winds blow!
    • When the district administration offers safe camps to be in, please take up the offer and stay safe in these camps!
    • The Indian Meteorological Department and the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Commission will offer regular news/suggestions. Guidelines through Facebook, Twitter and the APP TNSMART. Follow them!
    • Keep watching television or listening to the radio to get the latest authentic news!

  • Due to the `Mandous` storm, government buses will not run in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, and Villupuram tonight!

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall as Cyclone Mandous was over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and 500 km southeast of Karaikkal.

  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are kept ready in all district collectorates to face any eventuality.
