In Chennai, the day temperature remained close to 40 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day yesterday and this made the lives of many Chennai residents difficult.

There might be light rains in some places for the next 2 days and this was according to the meteorological department. The meteorologists have now pointed out that peak summer days and scorching heat would be mostly associated with the month of May. These could also be in June in some coastal places.

It is interesting to mention here that the average maximum temperature in June in Chennai is 37 degrees Celsius. This is the same as that in the May month. In Nungambakkam and in Meenambakkam on Monday, the maximum temperature recorded was 40.1 degrees Celsius and 39.5 degrees Celsius respectively. In 2019, on 11th June and on 16th June, the mercury level touched a maximum of 41.5 degrees Celsius. On Monday, places like Kodungaiyur and Kolathur experienced light rains in the evening and brought huge relief for the residents.

The presence of south-westerly winds plus convective activity would be responsible for triggering light to moderate rains in Chennai and in other places like Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, Theni and Nilgiris districts etc. This was as per Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai.

He then spoke about how south-westerly wind is already prevailing in coastal places like Chennai and how dry winds from interior places reached the coastal places. In the past 24 hours, Chinnakalar belonging to the Coimbatore district received the highest rainfall of 3mm.
