The news that has come out now is at the RTOs or Regional Transport Offices in TN there is a sudden increase in the number of driving licence applicants now. Point to be noted here is soon hefty fines for violating traffic rules would come into force.
Since the 3rd week of August, the RTOS in Chennai has been crowded than normal. Information is in addition to the fresh driving or LLR applications many people thronged RTOs in Chennai to get duplicate copies of their lost cards or to renew their expired licences etc. In August 2019, around 1.81 lakhs approached the RTOS in TN to get driving licence related services. It is now said that this was 20% more than what was reported in the last August.
It must be noted that out of 1.81 lakhs 30% arrived only after the second week of August that is after the union road transport ministry announced the revised fines for traffic violations. Once the amended provisions come into effect, driving vehicles without having licence would attract a fine of Rs 5000. It was mentioned by an applicant at the Meenambakam RTO that he was shocked to hear the news about a Delhi auto driver who paid Rs 23000 as fine for violating traffic rules. Hence he decided to be on the safe side now.
As per a senior official belonging to state transport department it is clear that the new rule would come into effect from the next week. He was answering to a question about the delay in TN regarding the revised fines.
