Penalties for traffic violations shoot up - confusion due to non-release of government order!

Posted on: 02/Sep/2019 12:28:59 PM
The New Motor Vehicles Act was implemented from 1st September (Sunday).

Accordingly, the penalties for traffic violations have shot up several times as compared to the old penalty system.

As per the new law, drunken driving including 2-wheelers (bikes) would entail a penalty of Rs. 10000. If children are allowed to drive cars, the parents would face imprisonment for 3 years.

However, as an official government order has not been issued by the State Government of Tamil Nadu, some confusion has prevailed in the pertaining activities!

Attributed to the main reasons of an enormous increase in the number of vehicles plying on the roads and more incidences of traffic violations, there has been a steep increase in the road accidents thereby causing an increase in loss of lives as well!

Especially, there has been a large number of loss of lives when the pillion rider on the 2-wheelers failed to wear helmets.

As the amount of penalty imposed was not high enough, the traffic violation offenders took it rather lightly and were not guilty of their faults.  This led to a situation where the scope for reducing/preventing accidents and the resultant losses of lives could not be implemented effectively.

As this fact struck truly hard, the central government took the drastic immediate action to increase the penalties imposed on traffic violations several times more!

This new Motor Vehicle Act came into effect from yesterday (Sunday, 1st September).

So, from yesterday, larger amounts of penalties were imposed and collected for the traffic violations. However, the State Government of Tamil Nadu is yet to release the Official Government Order regarding the latest revised Motor Vehicle Act and the increased penalties for traffic violations.

As there were no official orders from the senior traffic officials, the Police Staff have been rendered into some confusion regarding the actions to be taken! Thus, in the state of Tamil Nadu, the penalties for traffic violations remained the same even on 1st September (Sunday, yesterday).

The traffic police officials shared in this regard:
‘The official announcement regarding the latest Motor Vehicles Act implementation is still to be released as an official order. The activities regarding the same are under progress. It is expected that within a week’s time, the clear revised Moto Vehicles Act would be released and the penalties on traffic violations would be collected as per the revised state government order.
